Wedding Tradition of Lasso Ceremony & Coin Exchange Honored Family Traditions

This Lasso (or cord) symbolizes an infinite bond of love you share, may this cord remind you to face life together courageously and to support one another as a couple binding you thorough the years. This lasso can be made of many items including a Lei in Hawaiian society.

The Maid of Honor and the Best Man then remove the Lasso and the Minister continues the ceremony.

A Coin Exchange (Arras) is a tradition that involves the gift of these coins to the Bride. Originally, there was an understanding of the husband having a role as a “bread winner” and the wife of “home maker” so the coins were given and received not in a spirit of reciprocity but in a give/take relationship. In today’s society, these coins are a reminder of good stewardship for couples, these couples will mutually support each other, their children and the world around them. May God bless these coins that symbolize mutual support and responsibility.

Las arras, or Las arras matrimoniales (arrhae, wedding tokens, or unity coins) are used in wedding ceremonies in Spain, Latin America, and the Phillipines. The tradition is also followed, with varying names or customs, in countries and communities of Hispanic influences. Traditionally, in Spain and Latin America, there are 13 coins and an ornate box or chest, involved. The Philippines use a basket or pouch. The coins or blessed by the Priest or Minister prior to the ceremony. These 13 coins symbolize Jesus and the 12 apostles. Depending on the culture in which this tradition is followed, the tradition of “arras” may be used on different occasions, although it is rare, they may be used in Quincineras, debutant balls or at Bat Mitzvahs.

As the couple exchange these coins, my role as Minister is to first recite to the couple who will then repeat after me- “Bride/Groom, I give you these coins as a pledge of my dedication to you, the care of our home, and the welfare of our children.” The Groom/Bride then recites, “I gratefully accept your gift, and make the same pledge to you.”

The symbolism of these age old traditions is that of a bond between families and religion founded in faith, hope and the future.
