Unification Ceremonies

While Texas continues to wait for legislators dragging their feet to legalize marriage in Texas, I’ve received correspondence from many who are either misinformed to others lifestyle choices or perhaps, simply uncomfortable about life choices they do not understand.

Why is it that anything different from the norm can be argued, but unions out of the comfort zone of straight couples bring such strong opinions to those seeking the same rights for the Gay and Lesbian community?

Whether you are comfortable with others life choices or not- I’ve had many friends throughout my lifetime who were not straight and personally witnessed the bigotry against their personal choices for a mate.

For over 20 years, my dearest friend Charles Thompson struggled for affordable health care for his partner Dewitt McKnight who died here in Fort Worth unable to work and unable to afford treatment for heart disease.

Had Dewitt been able to marry Charles, he would have been added to the health insurance that could have saved his life.

For those who profess to be Christian, is it not true that we are asked NOT to judge others? It is only God who is in a position to pass judgment-not us.

Living in the Bible Belt, I find it interesting that the same folks who state they are God fearing Christians are also the same folks heckling a public Unification Ceremony. The reasons important to the couple that may or may not be important to your personal beliefs might make you uncomfortable, but I ask you to respect others choices as you would expect them to respect your own.

We are all in this world together dear friends. Perhaps, if we were a bit more open minded, we would have more compassion for each other during a moment of peace and happiness for each other in a world that needs as much peace as we can find.

Together, we are one nation under God no matter what religion you honor and your kindness is greatly appreciated.
