Parents of Twins? Information on College Scholarships Twin Laws Regarding Public Schools

Many of you know I’m an identical twin, what you may not know is that my sister Cindy Ann Daniel and I have fought for twin laws to allow parents to decide whether their children should be separated and assistance to families of multiples for years.

We were born at a time when twins were not a regular occurrence and, separated by school administrators who believed “separation created individuality.”

The fact is, separation creates anxiety and after being with your mirror image for 6 years, personality traits of twins can be damaged due to the separation.

Texas now has a Twin Law giving parents the choice of whether or not to separate their twins or, multiples. Many colleges now also offer scholarships for twins and multiples too.

My twin and I also successfully fought, and won the right for parents to have rescue inhalers with asthmatic children at ALL TIMES since Maryssa and Makenna Mahaney both suffer breathing issues and have been hospitalized numerous times following strenuous gym based activities at Austin Elementary.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t run out and find a cause to fight for but, when being separated affected me to such an extent in kindergarten that I stopped speaking for years, it should be noted that separation after a lifetime of having your best friend by your side is and always will be, traumatic.

Maryssa Mahaney stopped breathing and nearly died in my sister, Cindy Daniels arms while in an ambulance in Weatherford, Texas. The Texas Rescue Inhaler Act will hopefully prevent further school deaths of children needing an inhaler that is in the nurses office rather than where your child needs it when they need it!

School administrators are not psychologists and often, have no real relationship with the factors making up the unique attributes of multiples.

For these reasons and since my twin is raising her twin grand daughters, Maryssa and Makenna Mahaney (our Little Pawners) we are outspoken and have been fighting to educate teachers of the unique relationships that being twins or multiples can bring to each other.

In the United States, each 1000 births result in 33.3 pairs of twins. The financial responsibilities of parents of multiples are well known. You need to buy two of everything!

There are different types of twins, fraternal twins are the result of two eggs being fertilized and often a boy and a girl. Identical twins are the result of one egg being fertilized and either girls are boys that have strong similarities of one another.

The Northwest Association of Mothers of Twin Clubs, Inc. Founded in 1963 has clubs in several states and even the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is intended for the mothers of twins (or multiples) and provides information and support to parents of multiples.

Gwen Lawson Making Opportunities for More Schooling- created in 2000, this scholarship assists mothers of multiples who are seeking a college degree.

Shan Pynes Scholarship- Established in
1969, these scholarships are awarded each year to multiple birth individuals attending college. The deadline each year is March 1st.
