Common Questions When Dealing With The Death Of A Loved One In Texas

What do I do when a death occurs?

If a death occurs in a hospital, nursing home or hospice care center, the nurses will ask which funeral home you have chosen to take care of the deceased. The nurse will then call the funeral home and give the necessary statistic information. At Baumgardner Funeral Homes, they are on call 24 hours a day 7 hours a week and, as soon as the body is released will immediately pick up the body and take your loved one to the funeral home. If the death occurs at home without hospice/ doctor care, call 911 and the county coroner will make arrangements to pick up the deceased and move the body to the morgue.

What happens next?
The funeral director will speak with the family when they pick up the deceased or if the family is not present, will ca you to make funeral arrangements. You will be asked if you desire embalming. This will be necessary of you plan on having a viewing (open casket). If you are not having a viewing such as a direct cremation or immediate burial, embalming is not required.

What do I bring to the funeral home?

If there is a viewing, the funeral director will ask you to being clothes with you along with statistic information which will be needed to fill out the death certificate. Obituary information, including a list of survivors and a picture (optional) will be needed at this time if you choose to have the funeral home make all the arrangements necessary to conduct the type of service you are wanting. Baumgardner Funeral Homes will make sure all the necessary steps are taken from the start to finish. They are here to help you.

How and when is payment for services due?
At Baumgardner Funeral Homes, assignment are accepted on most insurance policies, cash, checks, or credit cards. Your payment is due prior to the service date.

Where do I get a death certificate?

Baumgardner will prepare the death certificate with the information you provide. They will then take it to the doctors office for him/her to fill out the bottom section which is the cause of death etc. They will then take it to the city or county vital statistics office where they will give the number of copies that have been ordered (I suggest t least 5). Some doctors officers allow submission of the certificate electronically and then it is submitted to the State Vital Statistics; they will them send the completed copies of the death certificates to the funeral home and you will be called to come pick them up. The social security administration will also be notified of the death.
