Wendy Wortham on Choosing Flowers by Season to add Color to Weddings

Years ago, weddings were white-period. Brides wore white, and cakes, flowers and Centerpieces followed. A color loving couple would be lucky to work in a few fun accents with color, maybe a gift of sapphire earrings for her, a crimson tie for him.

Getting flowers by season provides you a better value:

Red:
Spring- Anemone ranunculus, sweet pea, tulip
Summer- Gerber daisy, zinnia
Fall- Marigold, zinnia
Winter- Amaryllis, anemone, poinsettia, ranunculus, tulip

Orange:
Spring- Ranunculus
Summer- Gerber daisy, Oriental lily, snapdragon, zinnia
Fall- Chrysanthemum, marigold, zinnia
Winter- Ranunculus

Yellow:
Spring- Daffodil, ranunculus, tulip
Summer- Alstroemeria, aster, chrysanthemum, freesia, lily, snapdragon, sunflower, yarrow
Fall- Chrysanthemum, marigold
Winter- Narcissus, ranunculus

Green:
Spring- Hosta, Kermit mum, tulip
Summer- Cymbidium orchid, Hosta
Fall- Foliage, kale
Winter- Bells of Ireland, holly, pine, tulip

White:
Spring- Anemone, delphinium, lilac, narcissus, peony, ranunculus, sweet pea, tulip
Summer- Aster, chrysanthemum, freesia, Gerber daisy, hydrangea, iris, lisianthus, Queene Anne’s lace, snapdragon, tuberose
Fall- Aster, chrysanthemum, cosmos, jasmine, Lilly, poinsettia, ranunculus, Star of Bethlehem, tulip

You could choose to “go with the season” when using color in your wedding, Mother Nature often gives cues of color. Pink works any time of the year, but light pastels and barely there hues like buff can look “washed out ” for a fall or winter wedding.

In the summer, reserve dark colors like burgundy for accents.

Many gorgeous weddings feature a collection of colors that blend well together. Much like an English garden, with green, yellow , pink, red and brown.

It’s your wedding, a day of celebration and beauty- have fun and “mix it up a bit.”
